Below are a few more tips to help your dream of owning a log home come true:
RESEARCH: Succesful log home owners all agree about the importance of proper research. Besides looking differently, log homes are also made, sold and built differently. Separate from the home itself, is the process of purchasing land, funding the home and its creation, and relocating. The process of purchasing and constructing a log home without proper research can be more of a challenge than it should be. At Elk Country Construction, we are prepared to help you with each and every step as you walk down the path to your new log home.
COLLECT IDEAS: Collecting various ideas about the design and decorating of your dream log home is a very useful activity. Don't limit your research to the different log home magazines, use any magazine pertaining to home designs or decorating. Use them to look for details regarding the bigger picture. If you see a picture of a luxurious home or log home that realistically, is not in tune with your particular tastes or budget; dont stop there, look closer and you may spot a decorating idea, door, fireplace, etc. that may be perfect for your new log home. Creating a binder divided into different sections enables you to save and sort various pictures into future rooms. When it comes time to meet with a designer or log home representative such as Sara & Kevin from Elk Country Construction, your collection of ideas will be simple to go through and will convey your tastes, needs and wants more efficiently.
CHOOSE A LOOK: Although all log homes look great from the road, each and every log home is unique. After a closer inspection, they definately have some differences. After viewing different log homes and collecting different pictures, your perception of log homes will become more refined. With all the different styles available, try to recognize what it is about each look that you like best.
The largest differences are with the joinery and with the profiles. The log joinery is what keeps the outside out and the inside in. The profile is the way a log looks in shape. The Contour, “D Log” or full round logs, handpeeled or milled, chinking or not, are common options you will see. Milled logs are formed with precision machinery. They can then be draw knifed to give a hand-peeled look while still providing uniformity with an even, tight fit. The signature feature of a log home is its corners. They may be overlapping or interlocking and it is important to familiarize yourself with these types of corners and choose which you like best.
PUTTING TOGETHER YOUR "DREAM TEAM": REMEMBER THIS! A good product put together incorrectly will not perform the way it was intended! A bad product put together perfectly will perform perfectly bad! You not only need a great product, but you also need a great builder. With Elk Country Contrution teaming up with REAL LOG HOMES your dream team is now complete. You get a great conciencious builder that is building a great product. If you dont have both your bases covered, you homebuilding experience will be something short of perfect!
PROTECTING YOUR INVESTMENT: With a REAL LOG HOME from Elk Country Construction, you have the piece of mind that all logs (except cedar) are dip treated in Timbor before it ships to your site. Timbor is a penetrating borate solution designed to protect your log home against the elements. Together with your topical treatment & purposeful design you can decrease future maintenance needs by keeping your logs protected. Other features like overhangs and porches, logs placed well off the ground to avoid splash back from mud and rain, no plants touching logs and clearing trees around the house to avoid constant shade should be considered. Fortunatley, these features also enhance the appearance of a log home. Porches that protect the logs also add traditional appeal and stonework around the foundation of the log home raises the logs and offers a flattering transition.
DECIDE HOW MUCH YOU WANT TO BE INVOLVED: Although some people get involved for the pride, savings, and/or experience, unless you are good with tools it is best to allow professional trades people to complete your log home. Be aware that the work is time consuming and detail oriented, and you may not save as much money as you think if you act as your own contractor. A licensed general contractor has relationships with good subcontractors, which may yield you better prices and better timelines.
You will, however, be asked to make many decisions as the work on your log home progresses. This is usually more than enough work for most people. However, enjoy the process! Creating a log home which will last a lifetime and last for your future generations is our passion. We here at Elk Country Construction and will do everything we can to ensure that it also is an awesome experience!
