Creating Additional Usable Square Footage
Many times people ask us: How can we get the best value for our money? Everyone turns initially to the concept of a basement, which as we all know is one of the best ways to create extra space at a very inexpensive price per square foot. However basements are not for everyone -- your property may not be conducive to adding one or you may not want the stairs issue as you age. So here are some other ideas to ponder over.

Covered Breezeways:
This option is very popular in the Northwest, especially if you want to create a covered out-of-the-weather environment between the garage and the home. The concept began as just a covered walkway but has in recent years expanded into numerous concepts. Breezeways have been used as formal entryways, laundry rooms, walk-in pantries and even additional bathroom space. Such an addition is an extremely inexpensive way to gain that much needed additional space.

Garages/Shops with Apartments Above:
Like the breezeway, an apartment above a garage or shop can create as much as double the square footage space. Add either a shed or gable dormer, and you gain a fully usable room. It may only be for additional storage, however think of the potential -- an office, guest apartment with bathroom, complete separate apartment for family visits, a hobbies room and living quarters while your home is being constructed!
